The Middle Update 9/1/17

We are ready.

"Focus on the Fundamentals" - Consistency, relationships, pedagogy

First Day
We'll continue our middle school tradition of having all teachers greet the students on the playground on the morning of the first day.  Students will start arriving to school at 7:20 am.  After the first bell, students will proceed to the gym for a brief "Kickoff to the School Year Assembly" before heading to their first class of the day.

New Bells
Our new sound system in the 1-8 building has allowed us the use of bells.  We will utilize bells for the entry into school signal (7:28), start of the school day (7:33), start of elementary day (8:35), end of Middle School day (2:45), and end of elementary day (3:35).

Hattie's Mindframe Focus

Mindframe #1: My fundamental task is to evaluate the effect of my teaching on students’ learning and achievement.

There are a range of variables that can affect learning including the curriculum, the materials and resources used, the previous learning experiences of the students and the efforts students put in to their work. Teachers often attribute students’ academic success or failure to these factors. However, while it is true that they have some impact, all are beyond the control of the teacher. The only thing a teacher can control is what he or she does every day in front of the class – and it is this which Hattie argues has the greatest impact on learning. If we focus on the impact we are having, the impact of the other factors increases as a result.  Knowing their impact requires a teacher to have high expectations of their learners, seeing ability as something that is changeable, not fixed. This in turn places responsibility on the teacher to be flexible and creative in order to meet the needs of all pupils and develop their ability. This requires considerable reflective thought and self-questioning on the part of the teacher. So, how can we find out if we are having an impact on our students? Hattie has a simple answer: feedback. Teachers need feedback on where they are going, where they currently are and what their next step should be. This comes from listening carefully to students, the errors they make, the questions they ask and the successes they have and responding appropriately. We need to evaluate not only what we are doing and what our students are doing, but also the effect of what we do on what the students do AND the effect of what the students do on what we then do! Or, as Hattie puts it, we need to see learning through the eyes of our students.

Policy Update
This policy outlines steps school personnel should take to protect themselves due to the natural proximity we have with students on a day to day basis.  The policy addresses relationships, including appropriate social media use in the case of school staff and students.

3213 - STUDENT SUPERVISION AND WELFARE
Professional staff members because of their proximity to students are frequently confronted with situations which, if handled incorrectly, could result in liability to the District, personal liability to the professional staff member, and/or harm to the welfare of the student(s). It is the intent of the Board of Education to direct the preparation of guidelines that would minimize that possibility.

A professional staff member, or a person who works or volunteers with children, who is found to have had sexual contact with a student, including a student age sixteen (16) or older, shall be referred to the proper authorities and be subject to discipline up to and including discharge.

This policy should not be construed as affecting any obligations on the part of staff to report suspected child abuse under Wis. Stats. 48.981 and Policy 8462.

It is the responsibility of the District Administrator to prepare administrative guidelines to ensure the maintenance of the following standards:
A.Each professional staff member shall maintain a standard of care for supervision, control, and protection of students commensurate with assigned duties and responsibilities.

B.A professional staff member should not volunteer to assume responsibility for duties s/he cannot reasonably perform. Such assumption carries the same responsibilities as assigned duties.

C.A professional staff member shall provide proper instruction in the safety matters presented in assigned course guides.

D.Each professional staff member shall immediately report to the principal or immediate supervisor any accident or safety hazard s/he detects.

E.Each professional staff member shall immediately report to the principal or immediate supervisor any knowledge of threats of violence by students.

F.A professional staff member shall not send students on any personal errands.

G.A professional staff member shall not associate with students, at any time in a manner which gives the apearance of impropriety, including, but not limited to, the creation or participation in any situation or activity which could be considered abusive or sexually suggestive or involve illegal substances such as tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.

This provision should not be construed as precluding a professional staff member from associating with students in private for legitimate or proper reasons or to interfere with familial relationships that may exist between staff and students.

H.If a student comes to a staff member to seek advice or to ask questions regarding a personal problem related to sexual behavior, substance abuse, mental or physical health, and/or family relationships, the staff member may help the student make contact with certified or licensed individuals in the District or community who specialize in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the student's problem. Under no circumstances should a staff member attempt, unless properly licensed and authorized to do so, to counsel, assess, diagnose, or treat the student's problem or behavior.

I.A professional staff member shall not transport students in a private vehicle without the approval of the principal.

J.A student shall not be required to perform work or services that may be detrimental to his/her health.

K.Staff members are discouraged from engaging students in social media and online networking media, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.

L.Staff members are expressly prohibited, without permission of the building principal, from posting any video or comment pertaining to any student on social networking media or similar forums, such as YouTube without permission of the building principal

Most information concerning a child in school is a confidential student record under Federal and State laws. Any staff member who shares confidential information with another person not authorized to receive the information may be subject to discipline or civil liability. This includes, but is not limited to, information concerning assessments, grades, behavior, family background, and alleged child abuse (see Policy 8330).

Kickoff to another year in The Middle!

Tomorrow is the day we begin the journey of another school year!  I am looking forward to working collectively to make this year the best year for each of our students; both academically and developmentally!  I hope each of you had a great summer!  There was a lot of work happening here in the summer that has certainly prepared our building for what's to come.  When you see a custodian, please give them a shout-out for their hard work over the summer and a job well done!  Thanks Pam, Kristin, Marc, and Josh!

This is the first blog post of the year.  The goal of the blog to to communicate regularly all of the things that are happening in our school.  I will send out an email reminder each week to check it out.  The information posted is intended for everyone to read each week.

Welcome back, and I want to send a special welcome to our new team members!

Charlotte Reddeman - PE Teacher
Jennifer Hecht - Students w/Disabilities Teacher with an ELA focus
Molly Laufenberg - 7th/8th ELA Teacher

I believe strongly that we have assembled a special staff that is poised to take our student's achievement to levels that have not yet been achieved in this school!

Check HERE to see more information about all of the district's new teachers.

PD Days
We have three great learning days planned for us when you return on Monday.  Here is the latest schedule and please bring the items that you are asked to bring.

Evacuation Site Visits
We will be visiting our evacuation sites on Tuesday afternoon.  We will meet at 1:00 p.m. in Mrs. Rogness' room and discuss the plan for the visit and our procedures in case we ever need to do this.  Please bring your Go-Kits with you and check to see if they are accurate.  A huge THANK YOU to Mrs. McFarlane for coming in and getting them ready for us.

Tornado Drill and Fire Drill Directions
We need to have these posted in all of our classrooms.  You should have received a new copy in your mailboxes and they need to be up by the Open House.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Also, please keep in mind that there are certain regulations that we must follow to meet fire safety code.  This does include rules for hanging items from the ceiling, stacking items up and the amount of paper on the walls.  Please ask if you have questions about how your room meets this code.

Staff Resources
The folders below contain a lot of resources that are vital to the day to day operations of the school.  Please take a moment to review the documents that are relevant to you.  Some of the documents are still in progress.

See you Monday!...maybe -on a personal note...the Pritzl baby was due this past Wednesday...she isn't here yet :)

The Middle Update 6/2/17

Another week is in the books, and we have the most important one coming up.  We will keep a strong academic focus right up until kids are dismissed for lunch on Wednesday afternoon.

Article of the Week
The article this week provides insight into what I think is the most critical parts for us to routinely facilitate successful experiences in the classroom no matter what the student roster looks like.  One of my favorite former teachers/coaches, Mike Plemon, who I'd consider the reason I went into education, says it best..."Capture their heart, and you'll capture their mind".  This article outlines action steps for each one of us to help us build our skills in this area.

5 Tips for Creating Real Rapport With Your Students

Staff Meeting on Monday 6/5
We will have a staff meeting on Monday (6/5) in Mrs. Anderson's room.  We will review some final data, take a survey and celebrate many of our accomplishments from the school year.

Last Week of School Reminders
During this last week it's especially important that our guiding principles (each minute of class time is crucial for guiding students forward) hold true right up until the last minute of class on the last day of school.  We treat the last day/week of school as if it was any other.  We will run this Early Release Schedule on the last day of school with normal classes taking place.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Wednesday.  I would like all middle school staff members to be out on the playground from 12:20 - 12:30, and then out by the buses afterwards to send our students off on a positive note.

School Supply Lists for next school year
Please review the supply lists and update this list as necessary for next school year.

The Middle Update 5/26/17

This was a busy week with the talents of our students on full display in many different areas...I hope everyone has the chance to enjoy a long weekend with your family and friends.

Article of the Week
The article this week highlights the importance of ending the year strong right up until that final dismissal.

Finishing the Year Strong: They Deserve Your Best

Staff Meeting on Monday 6/5
We will have a staff meeting on Monday (6/5) in Mrs. Anderson's room.

End of Year Meetings
Each teacher will need to meet with me to discuss the final SLO results and the PPG reflections.  For Summary Year teachers, we will also review the final reflections of our Domains 1-4 conversations.  As you finish up your final data collection, analysis, and self-scoring for the SLO's, please let me know when you are ready to discuss the results.  We will either utilize bi-weekly meeting time, or set up another time for this meeting.
In the meetings I have had so far, I have been impressed to see how the "targeted assessment" process, has led to impressive achievements for the related SLO.  For the teachers I have met with already, this process has led to focused efforts to improve student achievement in the targeted areas.

Carelli Cup Home Stretch
Our 8th Graders have won this year's Carelli Cup with a strong showing in the final event.

End of the School Year Preparation
The remaining weeks of school will seem to go very fast.  As we plan for the end of the school year, a reminder that our guiding principles (each minute of class time is crucial for guiding students forward) hold true right up until the last minute of class on the last day of school.  We treat the last day/week of school as if it was any other.  We will run this Early Release Schedule on the last day of school with normal classes taking place.

The Middle Update 5/21/17

Throughout this time of year, our graduates look back on their educational careers, and their thoughts often turn to the teachers that had the kind of positive impact that propelled them to this point in their lives. These final weeks serve as some of our final opportunities to make an impact for the students in our classrooms.  Most often, it is the students that frustrate us the most that need us the most.  We have this opportunity each day to provide this inspiration to each kid...how cool is that?  The most out of every classroom minute is the expectation from each student and parent every day until summer break.  Let's finish the year strong, focusing on building/enhancing the skills of our students.

Article of the Week
The article this week highlights our careers as educators...a quick reminder from the perspective of a teacher.  "
We are change makers, and that is something to be proud of."

The Middle Update 5/11/17

We are already halfway through May!  As it gets closer to the end of the school year, I cannot help but think of the summer slide that takes place each year as our students are out of school for three months.  While we cannot change the calendar, we can ensure that we create effective, lasting learning experiences right up until the last day for our students so the effects of the summer slide are minimal.

The Middle Update 4/22/17

I hope everyone gets the chance to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend.  Weeks are flying by, and our focus remains the same...using each and every minute of class time to maximize the achievement of each of our students.

Article of the Week
An article highlighting the rationale and practical execution strategies for one of our guiding principles: s
chools should make every effort to convey the message that class time is sacred time...and being efficient and effective will accelerate our student's achievement.

Time-On-Task

4th Quarter Grades
We are already three weeks into the 4th quarter, which means it's almost time to post current achievment grades for the standards in your class.  Grades should be posted no later than the end of next week (4/28).  We'll send the "grades posted" notice to parents next Friday.  Please be proactive in communicating with parents of students who may not be performing up to their potential, with plans in place to hold the kids accountable.

Student of the Month Breakfast
Our final recognition breakfast will be on Thursday, May 4th.  Congratulations to this month's recipients!

Deven Ripp - Ella Wentz - Dylan Elsing - Elexus LaRoche
Savannah Burgess - Ella Kellett - Adam Hehl -  Savannah Hubbard

Carelli Cup Home Stretch
We are nearing the home stretch in the race for the Carelli Cup.  One of the last events will take place on Thursday, 5/18, with students being released at 2:25 to the 1-8 Gym.  Mrs. Serstad is planning the event.  Feedback or suggestions to make our time together with the kids in the gym fun and memorable is always welcome.  We will have a more formal Carelli Cup Trophy presentation near the end of the school year.

Forward Exam Information
The 7th and 8th graders have completed their Forward Exam testing sessions.  The 6th graders will begin testing on Tuesday, 4/25.  The state testing season is almost done!  Thank you for your flexibility and efficiency in ensuring a successful testing environment and experience for our kids.

Forward Exam Testing Schedule

Tornado Drill Wrap-Up

The tornado drill that was conducted this past week was the most tornado drill that I have witnessed in our school.  Thank you for sharing the expectations with your students proactively, and for your work in creating the culture where our students execute those expectations.  Very nice!

The Middle Update 4/28/17

Puma Pride Committee Meeting
At our monthly meeting this past week, we discussed a couple of different topics:
-Assignment Notebooks
-Hall Pass Procedures
-Puma Pride Rubric Revisions

We discussed and planned for some potential adjustments to the way we do things in these areas.  The committee members should be seeking feedback from their respective departments.  Proposals will be shared at our staff meeting on 5/10/17.

Article of the Week
The article this week centers around practical habits to ensure rigor in the classroom.

22 Ways to Add Rigor to Your Classroom

4th Quarter Grades
As a reminder, student progress grades should be posted for 4th quarter.  We'll send a note on Monday to parents that mid-quarter grades can be viewed in Infinite Campus.

Student of the Month Breakfast
Our final recognition breakfast will be on Thursday, May 4th.  Congratulations to this month's recipients!

Carelli Cup Home Stretch
The final event schedule has been adjusted slightly. The last event will take place on Friday, 5/26, with students being released at 2:25 to the 1-8 Gym.  Mrs. Serstad is planning the event.  Feedback or suggestions to make our time together with the kids in the gym fun and memorable is always welcome.  We will present the Carelli Cup to the winning grade after the final event on 5/26.  The winning grade will also receive an ice cream party sponsored by the Parent's Club.

Forward Exam InformationWith only a couple of students that need to participate in make-up sessions, we are almost complete with our annual state testing requirement.  Thank you for your flexibility in helping to make the sessions as seamless as possible.
