The Middle Update 4/29/22

In Strong School Cultures, People Articulate the Following CORE Beliefs Through How They Behave:

All Students Can Learn at High Levels

All Students Will Learn Because of What We Do

Students Do Well if They Can

What WE Do Makes the Difference for the Kids in School

We Never Give Up On Kids

Teacher Appreciation Week!!!!!

This upcoming week is a very special week to highlight and recognize the special work you all do each and every day.  The PAD Parent's Club are planning something special each day (see below), and the School Board plans to treat you all on Wednesday.  I know I appreciate each and every one of you, and our school is great because of you.  It is my hope that teacher appreciation continues to spread beyond just this upcoming week, as the work you do impacts the lives of our students, and in turn our community at large.  Thank you!

Resource of the Week

We continue to take a deeper dive into restorative practices and the effectiveness of this type of approach to managing student behavior.  One thing is clear, it centers around trusting, positive relationships between adults and students.

"Building a Positive School Climate Through Restorative Practices" - Sarah Klevan

"Restorative practices are grounded in the science of learning and development in that they prioritize supportive relationships with adults, which are essential for students’ healthy development and academic success.  As evidence of the benefits of restorative approaches continues to accumulate, districts and schools have the opportunity to prioritize what students, families, and community advocates have long sought: safe, inclusive schools that promote well-being and connectedness."

Homeroom and Connectedness

I was fortunate to be able to spend Friday morning in Mrs. Graeve's Homeroom.  The students were in a circle and shared what they thought was going to be informational, interesting, or exciting about their upcoming weekend.  A simple activity like this is crucial to building a community and helping students feel connected to school and each other.  These types of activities must be happening consistently and regularly during Homeroom time to build these types of connections over the course of the school year.

Assembly on Friday (5/6)

We'll be having our Spring Assembly this Friday (5/6) afternoon.  We'll plan to dismiss students to the gym at 2:50, and we'll adjust the 5th grade elective times (#1 - 1:50-2:20, #2 - 2:20-2:50).  Our Student Leadership Group has been working hard to plan an exciting event for our students.

They have also planned dress up days for the week, as an added little bit of fun for this week.

Middle School Upcoming Track Meets

We will be hosting track meets for our middle school students on both Monday, May 2nd and Thursday, May 19th.  Thanks to everyone that has signed up so far, we really appreciate it.  I encourage all middle school staff members to sign up to work the event and help support our Middle School Track athletes if you are able.  I'm predicting beautiful spring evenings for both nights!

A Visit from Our New MS Principal, Mr. Hunter

We will welcome Jacob to our school on Thursday, May 19th.  We'll have a Meet and Greet in the Middle School IMC with staff from 3:20-4:00, followed by an opportunity for our community to meet Mr. Hunter afterwards.  He had some big news this past week as his family welcomed a little girl, Joelle James, to their family on Wednesday.

MS Staff Celebration

We'll plan to gather as a staff on the last day of school (6/3) again.  We are always looking at opportunities to laugh and smile, so if you have any funny moments or causes for celebration, please add them to this Google Form, so we can share it with everyone.  If you have any ideas or thoughts on a great way to celebrate together, please share them with me.
